About

Welcome!

My name is Carissa Taylor, and I am a reading tutor, writer, mother of two, and a passionate advocate for literacy.

I have a PhD in Sustainability and a Concentration in Elementary Education. When my children struggled to read, I dove headfirst into the research on reading. This journey opened my eyes to the tumultuous state of reading education today.

Seeing just how many of our kiddos are left behind in the current system made me a dedicated proponent for change. I am now a linguistic phonics reading tutor with an expert certificate in the Reading Simplified intervention program.

On this blog, you can read about a wide range of Literacy Topics, including how our brain reads, everything you ever wanted to know about reading fluency, the real-world research on phonics programs and much more, including links to free decodable resources.

Tutoring & Contact Info

Please note that I currently only tutor in person in my local area.
I do not offer online tutoring at this time.

However, I do love helping my fellow parents and educators navigate the uncertain waters of early childhood literacy. Please have a look around my blog, as I offer a lot of free resources, and feel free to reach out  to me if you'd like to chat about anything. I'm always happy to talk.

In-Person Tutoring:

After teaching at the University level, I now tutor primary school students who struggle with reading. After an initial assessment, I tailor my program to best meet each student’s individual needs and cater to their interests. I teach phonics, phonemic awareness, word automaticity, fluency, morphology, and reading comprehension strategies.

While my focus is reading first and foremost, I can add on extra spelling, writing, handwriting or other English literature components if those are areas you’d like your child to work on.
